Attractions in London
Tottenham Court Road, located in central London, UK, is located near a wide array of attractions. Bordering the historic Bloomsbury district, with museums, theatres, and renowned shopping nearby, visitors will always find something to do near Tottenham Court.
London’s most visited attraction and the world’s oldest museum is located within walking distance of Tottenham Court. The British Museum, established in 1753, covers two and a half miles and features 90 galleries with exhibits spanning the last two million years of history. Some of the most popular and treasured exhibits are the Rosetta Stone, Egyptian mummies, and the Mildenhall Treasure. Located a short distance from the British Museum is the Cartoon Museum. Established in 2006 and dedicated to cartoon arts, caricatures, animation, and comics, the Cartoon Museum features cartoons from the 18th century to the present day.
A number of important theatres are located within easy distance of Tottenham Court. Designed as a multi-purpose venue, the Prince Edward Museum opened in 1930. Over the years the building has been the site of the London Casino, a servicemen’s club during WWII, and a cinema. It has been restored to its original name and purpose and renovated to include modern amenities. Also opened in 1930, the unassuming exterior of The Phoenix Theatre disguises a stunning art deco interior. Lawrence Olivier got his start here, starring in the theatre’s first play, “Private Lives.” Built in 1929 with an original seating capacity of 3000, the Dominion Theatre has shown everything from the first “talkie” movies, to opera, plays, rock concerts, and film premiers. “South Pacific” and “The Sound of Music” enjoyed lengthy stays during the 1950’s and 1960’s as did “Grease” during the 1990’s. The Dominion is one of London’s more popular locations for movie premiers.
One of London’s most famous shopping streets, Oxford Street, is only a short walk from Tottenham Court. Oxford Street, which has been a premier shopping district since the late 19th century, is home to three malls, hundreds of shops and restaurants, John Lewis Department Store and Selfridges Department Store. The second largest department store in London and one of the largest in Europe, Selfridges is an attraction in itself. Established in 1909, Selfridges is known for it’s spectacular and sometimes controversial window display and was voted the best department store in the world by the Global Department Store Summit in 2010.
