Located in Central London, UK, Tottenham Court is one place people will not want to miss when visiting England. Tottenham Court Road is a one-way, three-lane street running about three-quarters of a mile between St.Giles Circus to Euston Road, which is near the border of the City of Westminster, and the borough of Camden. The road is easily accessed by numerous bus routes and three underground tube stations: Tottenham Court Road, Warren Street, and Goodge Street.

In the 13th century, a manor house owned by William de Tottenhall sat near the northwest corner of Tottenham Court Road. By the 15th century, the area was referred to as Totten, Totham or Totting Hall. Eventually, the manor was leased to Queen Elizabeth and came to be called Tottenham Court. By the end of the 18th century, the manor and the property where it sat, was purchased by the Fitzroys; but, the name Tottenham Court stayed.

Tottenham Court is well known for its abundance of electronic shops. After WWII surplus electronics were bought and sold in many shops along the road. Present day there are a wide range of shops including Micro Anvika, a top retailer in the UK, and Ask, a family owned business with over 25 years experience selling on Tottenham Court. These stores specialize in electronics from computer components to laptops and desktops to audio-video systems. Retailers of low-end equipment are famous for charging at will; and it is not uncommon to come away with a bargain on a nice laptop or other pieces of electronics. Most of the electronic shops are located on the south end of Tottenham Court Road.

On the north end of the road, there are numerous furniture retailers; Habitat and Heals being the most well known globally. Habitat furniture emphasizes functionality and simplicity with beauty and affordability. In addition they sell kitchenware and items of décor. Heals is similar to Habitat, except more exclusive and expensive. A favorite furniture store among Londoners is Purves & Purves. This store offers modern furniture and home accessories. Gift shops, financial institutions, snack bars and restaurants round out the consumer-oriented landscape along the length of the road.

For sightseeing adventures, across the street from the Habitat and Heals is Whitefield Gardens where the painting “Fitzrovia Mural” adorns the side of a house. This mural is over 60 feet high and shows people of the area at work and play. In addition to this mural, 12 glass panels were recently erected in the garden, each five feet high, with a collage on each side representing the people of the area. The panels are called “Our glass” and each carries a specific title. A 13th panel displays an index to the people on the panels.

The British Museum can be accessed from the Tottenham Court Underground Station and a mere five minute walk from the Tottenham Court Road Underground is the Odeon cinema complex. Further down from the Odeon is the Dominion Theatre London where live concerts and stage shows are shown. Within close distance, Charlotte Street is popular for its great selection of dining and drinking establishments. Nearby in Covent Garden tourists can enjoy street performers, markets and more dining and entertainment spots.

There are at least 15 hotels within a mile of Tottenham Court in London, UK. They range from the 4-star Bloomsbury Hotel to the Staunton Hotel Bed & Breakfast. Tottenham Court is a highly interesting and entertaining area of London. Visitors can bargain hunt in the morning, appreciate art in the afternoon, and enjoy a live stage show at night. Throughout the day and night they can satisfy their hungry and thirst in the snack bars and wonderful cafes and restaurants.
